HEIC vs WebP, measured
Both are modern formats, and HEIC is the more efficient of the two: at matched quality the same photograph is meaningfully smaller as HEIC. You convert anyway because almost nothing outside Apple's ecosystem will open a HEIC, whereas every current browser reads WebP.

HEIC via macOS sips at quality 80, WEBP at quality 92, the settings at which both scored the same structural similarity against the master. Measured on one 3840 x 2160 (8.3 MP) photograph, decoded once and then encoded into each format from that same master, so neither format inherits the other's compression artifacts. Your own files will land on different numbers; the direction and rough scale of the gap is what carries over. Quality 92 is the setting that matches HEIC on structural similarity, which is what makes the columns comparable; the converter itself writes a photograph at quality 80, so your own WebP will come out below the figure here. You are trading some size for a file the web can actually display.
Questions
Why can I not just upload the HEIC to my website?
No browser decodes HEIC in an <img> tag, not even Safari. Visitors would see a broken image. It has to be converted before it goes on a page.
How much bigger will the WebP be?
Expect roughly 1.2 to 1.6 times the HEIC for a typical iPhone photo. Converting the same photo to JPG usually lands closer to 2 times.
Does this conversion run on the server?
Yes. HEIC decoding is not available in browsers, so these files are uploaded, converted in memory, and discarded immediately. They count toward the 20 per day limit.
Is Live Photo motion preserved?
No. Only the still frame converts. The paired video component of a Live Photo is not part of the HEIC file being uploaded.
