JPG vs PDF, measured
This is the cheapest image-to-PDF conversion there is, because PDF already speaks JPEG. The photo is re-encoded at quality 90 and embedded directly, so for an ordinary photograph the PDF is the JPG plus a few hundred bytes of structure. The one case where it grows is flat colour, which is not what JPGs usually contain.

Reproduce with `node scripts/measure-pdf.mjs`, which runs the same src/lib/pdf.ts this converter uses. The photograph row lands slightly under the source because the input JPG was itself encoded at quality 90; a JPG saved at quality 95 or higher will lose a little more, since the conversion re-encodes rather than copying the original bytes through. Nothing here is a passthrough, so converting the same file back and forth repeatedly will slowly degrade it, the same as re-saving any JPEG.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does converting to PDF lose quality?
A little. The photo is re-encoded as JPEG at quality 90 rather than copied through untouched, so a JPG originally saved at quality 95 or 100 loses some detail. At normal photo quality the difference is not visible. Do not repeatedly convert the same file back and forth, since each pass re-encodes.
Why is my PDF a slightly different size than my JPG?
Because it is a re-encode, not a copy. For a photograph already at quality 90 the result lands within about 1%, sometimes fractionally smaller. For a JPG containing flat colour or a screenshot it can grow by roughly a fifth.
Can I combine multiple JPGs into one PDF?
Not yet. Every image becomes its own single-page PDF. You can upload a batch and download the results as a ZIP, but merging them into a single multi-page document is a separate feature.
Will my photo be rotated correctly?
Yes. EXIF orientation is applied before the image is written into the PDF, so photos taken on a phone held sideways come out the right way up rather than lying on their side.
Does this count against the daily limit?
Yes. JPG to PNG or WebP runs in your browser with no limit, but PDF cannot be produced in the browser, so the file is uploaded and converted on the server. That counts toward the 20 files per day shared across converting and compressing.
