JPG vs PNG, measured
This is the one conversion worth pausing on. PNG is lossless, so it is easy to assume converting a JPG to PNG improves it. It cannot. JPG already discarded that detail permanently, and PNG simply stores the reduced result at roughly nineteen times the size. What you gain is a format that will not degrade further each time you re-save it.

Measured on one 3840 x 2160 (8.3 MP) photograph, decoded once and then encoded into each format from that same master, so neither format inherits the other's compression artifacts. Your own files will land on different numbers; the direction and rough scale of the gap is what carries over. The honest reasons to do this conversion are editing without generation loss, and needing an alpha channel. Storage and page weight are reasons not to.
Questions
Will converting to PNG improve my image quality?
No. JPG compression already discarded detail and nothing can recover it. PNG stops any further loss, but it cannot undo what the JPG stage removed.
Why is the PNG so much larger than the JPG?
JPG throws away data to shrink the file; PNG keeps every pixel exactly. The gap is wide and it depends on the source: the more heavily compressed the JPG was, the more the PNG grows against it. On the photograph in the table above, a 631 KB JPG became 11,913 KB, about 19 times larger. A lightly compressed JPG lands nearer the low end.
Does the conversion upload my photos?
No. JPG, PNG, WEBP and SVG conversions run in your browser using canvas. The image never leaves your device and there is no daily limit on them.
Will my JPG become transparent automatically?
No. The PNG gains an alpha channel but every pixel stays opaque. You still need an editor to actually remove a background.
Is any metadata kept?
EXIF orientation is applied so the image is not rotated, but the rest of the EXIF block, including camera and GPS data, is dropped during re-encoding.
